Noni and Diabetes
Noni and diabetes? Here is a summary of the answers diabetes sufferers gave to of Dr. Solomon's survey. He surveyed 5,575 people who had used this natural supplement to help their diabetic symptoms. Eighty-two per cent of them reported that their symptoms lessened. According to Neil Solomon, the positive response probably relies on the "adaptogenic effect" of noni. I discuss this in the section on alternative medicine (use the button on the navigation bar to get there).
There are two types of diabetes. Type I usually beginsearly in life and is more severe. The body produces little or no insulin. In Type II or "late onset diabetes", the body cannot use the insulin it produces. Type II is managed very successfully by diet. The symptoms of diabetes are similar in both types: frequent urination with increased thirst, lack of energy, weight loss or gain (depending on type), visual problems, irritability, weakness and abdominal pain. These symptoms occur because the body cannot maintain stable levels of sugar in the blood. You read - in the section on noni's adaptogenic properties - that one of the effects of this juice is to help the body maintain balance. This is something I've seen in the diabetes sufferers who have come to me for homeopathy: after successful homeopathic treatment, patients found it much easier to control their blood sugar levels (an important part of the long-term management of this illness). Dr. Solomon's view is that certain of the ingredients of noni have specific effects on cells and the immune system. It is certainly possible - in my view - that the effect is general: overall the body is healthier when taking noni juice and therefore is much more likely to maintain and restore balance. This does not mean we are talking "cure" here ... insulin, or current medication remains important, and should not be changed without consulting your doctor or healthcare advisor. If you self-manage your own levels of insulin, you will know how to adjust for fluctuations in blood sugar. If you have experienced swinging levels of blood sugar, you can hope to see these come under better control. It is important to realise that any natural treatment is far slower to act than insulin. This is an approach to achieving better stability in the medium to long-term. It is notan approach to short-term, day-to-day regulation of blood sugar. That is what your insulin, or other medication, is for! Overall amounts of insulin may be reduced in the medium term, but only when your practitioner agrees. That would usually be based on agreeing with you that your blood sugar levels have been better managed over time, and that your self-administered insulin levels have been lower overall ... and that this change has persisted for some time.
Noni and diabetes: How much juice? What is a likely daily regime?
At the outset, you will need to manage the sugar content of the noni juice. Start to introduce the juice gradually, say half an ounce
(15mls.) per day, increasing by the same amount daily. It is likely to have the same impact on blood sugar as any other
fruit juice. Be vigilant until you have increased the daily intake of juice to an effective level, say 3 ounces (90mls) per day.
Case report: Noni and diabetes
Dr. Solomon quotes one case study.
This patient regularly experienced blood sugar readings of 200 - 300+ and lows (during coma) of 23. Her diabetes had been overall
very poorly controlled (note the units are mg/Dl).
She gives this report of her experience of noni and diabetes:
I am now in week five of taking noni ... in week two of taking 4 ounces a day. I have had only one occasion of extremely
low blood sugar during this time. My overall readings are more significant: they are much more balanced than they've ever
been! ... most of my readings are much more acceptable than before. Numbers from 120 to 180 are much more frequent than
before. And this has to be due to the noni because nothing else has changed ...
I would say that this quote is taken from an early stage in the process. It is pity that there is no longer term report. However, patients with long term problems, do become VERY familiar with changes ... and self-monitoring is such an important part of managing diabetes.More case studies of noni and diabetes will appear here as they become available.
