Noni Research Authors:
books and other information

Who are the main noni research authors presented here?

You will want to know about their backgound, the work they have done and where to find it ... this page will help you to find out more.

Professor Tom Kirkwood

Not strictly one of the noni research authors, professor Kirkwood was Britain's first Professor of Biological Gerontology. He focuses on the study of the biology of ageing. He is currently Professor of Medicine in the School of Clinical Medical Sciences at Newcastle University (UK).

He was educated at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and began research into ageing in 1974. He is author of over 200 scientific papers on a wide range of subjects connected to human ageing. His work has contributed to medical advances in understanding diseases of old age.

His "disposable soma" theory now influences much of the research being carried out worldwide into the phenomenon of ageing.

This states that the ageing process results from the accumulation - over the lifespan - of damage to cells and tissues.

Professor Kirkwood does not overstate the importance of diet in this process. He says:

"In a broader context, it is clear from epidemiological studies that nutrition can affect human lifespan both adversely in the case of poor nutrition—a diet rich in sugars and saturated fats, for example—and positively in the case of good nutrition—a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, unsaturated fats and red wine. These positive and negative effects on ageing can be accommodated very readily within an understanding of ageing that is founded on damage and repair. Our answer to the question “Is it food?” is therefore “Partly”."

In an article in The British Medical Journal (2003), he suggests that we may be able to delay the onset of age-related diseases - such as Alzheimer's - by delaying the build up of several kinds of damage, including oxidative damage (see: "The most pressing problem of our age" BMJ 2003;326;1297-1299). This offer general support for the roleof antioxidants described here.

Professor Kirkwood is the author of a number of books, including The End of Age which presents the information from his2001 Reith Lecture series. Here he presents an exploration of the effects of increased life expectancy and how scientific researchimpacts on our perceptions of life and death.

Noni research authors: Neil Solomon MD PhD

A physician who trained at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio; then at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. Here he wonthe Schwentker award for excellence in research. While part of the Johns Hopkins Medical School faculty, he spent two years at theNational Institutes of Health conducting research in nutrition, physiology, medicine, gerontology, endocrinology and heart disease.

Dr Solomon has retired from medical practice. He is now consultant to international corporations and NGOs of the UN.

He is a New York times best selling author who has researched the uses of noni (Morinda citrifolia) extensively. He surveyednearly 1,250 health professionals whose patients had used noni juice. This represented over 25,000 people who had used the juice to help their body alleviate some medical condition.

If you develop an interest in noni (and want to help your family, friends and colleagues) you will want to get a copy ofNoni Juice - how much, how often, for what. This contains much of the collected wisdom of that large survey.

Dr. Solomon has achieved prominence as one of a number of noni research authors who have focused on collating patient reports.

If you're wondering whether noni has a track record of helping a condition you're interested in, this is a good place to start.

He is also the author of an accessible booklet for athletes: The Noni Sports Phenomenon - enhancing athletic and fitness performance naturally. This recounts the experiences of professional athletes (from the worlds of baseball, American football, basket ball and a paralympic gold medallist) who have all used noni juice to enhance performance and/or help them recover from injury.

There is some exciting research being carried out. One of the noni research authors is described in the section on noni and cholesterol.
